At the time of this writing the Coronavirus Global Cases map by John Hopkins University says there are 229,390 total confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Many universities and school systems have moved online.

Many bars and restaurants are closed.

Performance venues are shuttered and almost all scheduled concerts have been cancelled or rescheduled.

With forced and volunteer quarantines, social isolation, and an endless stream of hopeless news reports it feels like the world is crumbling.

So what are you going to do?

Perspective

One response is to let your anxiety and panic overwhelm you.

Another response is to look at this time as a new set of opportunities.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What is good about this situation?
  • What can I learn from this situation?
  • What can I do about this situation?

Opportunities exist today that did not exist yesterday. What opportunities are you seeing?

Opportunities

At the intersection of problems to be solved, your personal interests, and your talent stack lies an abundance of opportunities.

  • Maybe it will be you who will come up with a brilliant solution for remote ensemble rehearsal.
  • Maybe it will be you who finds a way to serve your community in new and meaningful ways.
  • Maybe it will be you who creates a new technology that removes barriers and facilitates connection.

Some of these opportunities can be monetized. Meaning, people will pay you for the solution. Some of them can’t be or shouldn’t be. Or maybe you just choose not to. All of these choices are valid and worth while.

The point is: don’t get lost in the chaos of today. Instead learn to see each unfolding event as presenting a myriad of opportunities.
